My Experience:

As a So. Cal native Ventura has been one of those places I've visited as a child and then frankly hadn't given much thought to.  Well that has all changed!  I had a wonderful time in Ventura and will definitely return time and time again.  Some beach communities have become quit snooty, not Ventura.  This charming, friendly and walkable community welcomes visitors with open arms. 

The boardwalk is bustling with activity, children and families enjoying the clean miles of beaches. There also seems to be something for everyone.  I found Ventura to be affordable, and with a plethora of dining, shopping and activities to enjoy.  Guess what?  No parking meters, how refreshing.

I stayed at the only beach-front hotel, the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach Hotel.  The CP is clean and comfortable with beautiful views and a wonderful lobby and pool area. I also found the 'C-Street' restaurant inside the CP to be one of the best dining spots in town, and of course they have won awards.  Say hello to Brian Monsour, Restaurant Supervisor, no request is too large or small for Brian.  www.cpventura.com 

I also recommend you (of course) use the Visitors Center on California street, visit the Mission San Buenaventura and walk along main street.
