I'm going to make this real easy for you, GO!  Don't wait for summer to end, it's lovely in Big Bear Lake and you'll have a ball.  I recommend the following:

The perfect lodging: Windy Point Inn lake-front bed & breakfast. On the north shore, the Inn is quiet, relaxing, upscale, right on the lake, and you'll never want to leave.

If you do all of the above, your trip will be as wonderful and mine. However, this isn't my last trip to Big Bear Lake, I'm going fishing next time...
